Vanilla Spice Smoothie

Vanilla Spice SmoothieThere are no greens or weird sea algae powders in this smoothie as is my usual habit- sometimes it’s nice to have a sweet treat with a relatively simple, familiar ingredient list. This version has vanilla protein powder for extra nutrients, frozen banana to make it creamy and medjool dates for some extra but natural sweetness. The addition of spices assists digestion and adds some seasonal flavour, while vanilla almond milk brings it all together. It actually tastes surprisingly similar to egg nog, but since it’s only early November I’m refraining on the Christmas recipes for now (at least in name). GingerIf I could have access to only one spice it would be ginger, especially for the colder months. While most of our old world flavourings have underappreciated medicinal properties, ginger is an especially potent source of health benefits. Humans have benefitted from it for thousands of years and we most commonly turn to it now for fighting infections and for relief from inflammation (and the discomfort from resultant ailments like osteoarthritis) as well as for nausea and digestive issues. This time of year, when the weather is cold and damp and the flu runs rampant I like to sprinkle a bit in everything from smoothies, soups and stews to oatmeal to stir frys and noodles. I also like to steep a little piece or two of fresh ginger in hot water for ginger tea when flying or feeling under the weather.Vanilla Spice Smoothie
